Sugar Foot Scrub

Rest your tired feet with this sweet scrub!  When I worked at the spa, I got things like this for free.  Needless to say, I got a little spoiled!  The foot scrub is one of the things I miss the most because it felt like I was getting a pedicure when I used it!   After I became a teacher, I wanted more but couldn’t afford it, so it’s nice to know it’s practically free!  I had a little fun with it and put a drop of my neon green food coloring in it… I don’t think I’d give it as a gift this color, but it’s fun to use at my house!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbs. coconut oil (or oil of your choice)
  • 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract
  • 1 drop food coloring

Mix ingredients together.  Use to exfoliate your tired feet, and enjoy the aromatherapy of the peppermint!  Be careful when using peppermint extract, it can irritate some skin.  It’s good for oily skin, so I will put it in my face scrub when I’m feeling oily.  It’s all one big experiment, after all!

Yogurt Face Mask

This mask is good for balancing, exfoliating and soothing skin.  It also leaves a nice glow after you finish!  Yogurt is also supposed to work as a mild skin lightener, (the horror, the horror!) but this can also work to fade dark spots caused by various medicines or excessive sun exposure.  Ultimately, your skin will appear more even.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal (finely ground in food processor)
  • 1 tsp. honey

Mix ingredients.  Carefully put mask on face, avoiding eyes.  Let set on face about 10 minutes before washing off.  Enjoy your glow!

Brown Sugar Scrub

Sugar, sugar… ohhhh, honey, honey!  When I first moved to Florida, I worked at a spa for a few years.  It was a fun job, and I also learned a lot about skin care.  One of the most important things I learned is that most over the counter skin care products contain parabens.  This just another word for preservative, but it is linked to cancer and skin aging.  Just look on the back of your face and body wash– scary right?

After I quit the spa, I was able to stretch my freebies about six months before I had to start purchasing my own products.  I found that I could not afford them because they expire very quickly and often are expensive.  As I started looking for alternatives, I realized I could make my own products from household items.  Over the next few weeks, I’ll update some of my tricks and tips.  While I probably spend about the same as I would if I were to purchase my skin care products from the drug store,  I am saving myself peace of mind of knowing that what I would put in my body for food is the same product I’m using to care for my skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbs. coconut oil (sold at a local health foods store)
  • 1 Tbs. honey

Mix products together and scrub skin!  You can replace coconut oil with olive or sunflower oil if you want, but I think coconut smells the best.  Sometimes I’ll add a tsp. vanilla extract if I want a different smell!

A friend includes other ingredients in her scrub including coffee and grapefruit juice!  Check it out here: Pretty Posts

Have fun with your gorgeous, shimMERy skin!
